A Spiritual Discipline for Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024: Breath Prayers
There are many useful biblical, Christian spiritual practices. A simple one that I like and have been using while I walk is the breath prayer. It is a way to give Jesus more access to your deepest places.
A breath prayer is a simple, biblically-based prayer that you pray with each breath. It’s designed to help you focus your heart and mind on God, overcoming common obstacles to prayer like distraction or restlessness.
For this breath prayer, start by reading this simple scripture from the letter written by the apostle, Paul, to the Christians living in Ephesus in the middle of the first century:
Read it several times, pausing between each reading. Since it's such a short scripture, you can read it five or six times in just a couple of minutes.
Pay attention—there may be a word or phrase that is waiting for today to come alive in your heart. When that happens, turn it into a breath prayer. It might take a little creative effort with the Holy Spirit’s help, but the rewards can be great. The idea is simple: breathe in the gift you've discovered and breathe out anything that keeps you from fully receiving it. Here’s an example:
While breathing in, pray these words: Live deep in me!
While breathing out, pray these words: No disconnection!
This kind of prayer is very portable, which I why I like it so much. I can use it here, while I’m reading this scripture. But it is easily accessible while I am walking through the rest of my day. If I get a little overwhelmed, and forget to breathe in and breathe out this prayer, no worries! Just begin again.
