We ache for a simpler, quieter life. The 24-hour noise, nonstop activities, chaos, and unrest percolating in our culture unsettles us and fills us with unease. We are pulled in many directions, none of them feeling like home. Simplicity is the way that leads us back home after a period of spiritual homelessness in the cult of hurry. We’ve probably all tried a weight loss plan that promised amazing results in just one-month or a get-rich plan that never delivered the promise of wealth. Simplicity is not another spurious scheme. Those who do the hard work of evaluating and changing the pace and style of life find a level of satisfaction that makes them wonder why they waited so long to live more simply and slowly.
I am a huge fan of two things: 1) start today and 2) keep it simple — K.I.S. (We can leave out the second “S.”) That being said, here are five things I did today to reinforce my commitment to living slowly and simply. These steps work for me. They are simple to accomplish. They need minimal preparation. I share them with you in the hope that they may stimulate your own imagination about small measures you might take to achieve counter-culture simplicity that can boost levels of gentleness, kindness, peace of mind, and goodness inside you.
