7 Free Practices for Living More Simply in a Noisy World
A quiet guide for spiritual clarity and soulful resistance
Title: 7 Free Tools for Living More Simply with God
🌿 Introduction We live in a time of digital distractions, crowded calendars, and overextended souls.
Simplicity isn’t about minimalism for its own sake—it’s about creating enough space to live a life of depth, beauty, and nearness to God.
These seven practices aren’t rules. They’re invitations. Try one. Try all. Let them meet you where you are.
1. The Morning Pause
Begin your day before the day begins.
Before emails, newsfeeds, or noise—light a candle, sit for two minutes, and breathe. Offer the day to God.
📖 “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice..." —Psalm 5:3
🌀 Try this: Keep your phone in another room overnight. Start with silence instead of scroll.
2. Selah Time
Each day, take fifteen minutes to do nothing on purpose.
No scrolling. No planning. No input. Just stillness.
In the Psalms, Selah means to pause—to stop, breathe, and give space for what matters most to rise to the surface. This is your Selah time.
📖 “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength..." —Isaiah 30:15
🌀 Try this: Choose one time each day—mid-morning, lunch, or just before dinner. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Be still. Let the quiet do its work.
3. A Gentle No
Say no without guilt so you can say yes without regret.
Simplicity requires boundaries. You are not responsible for everything.
📖 “Let your yes be yes and your no be no..." —Matthew 5:37
🌀 Try this: Say no to one “good” thing this week so you can say yes to something better.
4. The Gratitude Walk
Take a 10-minute walk without headphones, just naming what you’re thankful for.
Let your environment become your sanctuary.
📖 “Give thanks in all circumstances..." —1 Thessalonians 5:18
🌀 Try this: Speak your thanks aloud as you walk. Keep it simple. Keep it real.
5. Digital Fasting
Choose one block of time each day to be unreachable.
Let the world go on without your reaction.
📖 “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." —Mark 6:31
🌀 Try this: Pick a recurring 2-hour window when no screens are allowed. Let that time be sacred.
6. A Simpler Table
Eat one meal this week slowly and without multitasking.
Taste your food. Bless it. Be present.
📖 “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts." —Acts 2:46
🌀 Try this: Invite someone to join you—or sit with God alone. Either way, make space to savor.
7. The Examen of Enough
At the end of the week, reflect with God on this question:
“Where did I sense I had enough—and where did I feel the ache of more?”
This isn’t judgment. It’s noticing.
🌀 Try this: Write one paragraph every Sunday night in response to that question.
🌿 Closing Blessing
May these small practices make room for larger peace.
May you live gently in a hurried world.
And may you come to believe that a quieter life is not less—
but more than enough.
Gratefully,
Gene (The Compass)
